103. JAMES PERRY⁴ JOHNSTON (LEWIS BURTON³, GEORGE GREGORY ("G.G." OR "GREG")², LEWIS¹) (#870) was born in Arkansas, June 6, 1862. JAMES died August 28, 1961 in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, at 99 years of age. His body was interred in Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri, Towles Cemetery.

He married twice. He married OPHELIA HAGOOD in Ripley County, Missouri, October 17, 1885. (OPHELIA HAGOOD is #871.) OPHELIA was born in Ripley County, Missouri,  October 19,1869. OPHELIA died January 10, 1890 in Middlebrook, Arkansas, at 20 years of age. Her body was interred probably in Randolph County, Old Siloam Cemetery.

He married FRANCES LENORA TOWELL in Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri, September 23, 1894. (FRANCES LENORA TOWELL is #872.) FRANCES was born in Illinois, February 24, 1875. FRANCES died January 6, 1944 in Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri, at 68 years of age. Her body was interred January 10, 1944 in Ripley County, Missouri, Towles Cemetery.

Note: I have not seen the headstone on the grave of James Perry's second wife for myself, but I have been informed that the name is spelled, "Francis L. Johnston" (spelled with an "i"). If this is true, I have to believe that it was simply an error by the engraver, rather than her really having been given the male spelling of the name.

Note: James Perry Johnston, in 1931, either placed or arranged to have placed a memorial marker at Siloam Cemetery in honor of his grandparents, George Gregory and Martha Burton Johnston. Supposedly, it is located on the original gravesite. Whether it is on the original site or not is strictly speculation at this point, as is whether or not there was an original marker, or markers. At the present time, there is no sign of an original marker.

The marker that James P. placed is constructed of concrete rather than marble or granite, and is deteriorating badly. It is in sore need of replacement with something more permanent.

211 ii. LEWIS THURMAN JOHNSTON (#1840) was born in Middlebrook, Arkansas, April 19, 1888. LEWIS died September 9, 1898 in Middlebrook, Arkansas, at 10 years of age. His body was interred in Randolph County, Arkansas, Siloam Cemetery.

212 iii. RALPH DANIEL JOHNSTON (#1841) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, January 29, 1896. RALPH died about 1978, near Long Beach, California. He married EDITH DUDLEY, date and place are not known. (EDITH DUDLEY is #1842.)

213 iv. (INFANT) JOHNSTON (#1843) was born and died in Doniphan, Missouri, January 4, 1897.

214 v. LELAND AUGUSTUS JOHNSTON (#1844) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, January 7, 1898. LELAND died October 29, 1908 in Doniphan, Missouri, at 10 years of age. His body was interred in Ripley County, Missouri, Union Cemetery.

215 vi. ROLAND DWIGHT JOHNSTON (#1847) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, March 16, 1900. ROLAND died about 1965 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. 

216 vii. REVA AGAVE JOHNSTON (#1845) was born in Ripley County, Missouri, December 29, 1901. She married GEORGE DUDLEY, date and place unknown. (GEORGE DUDLEY is #1846.)

217 viii. MARTHA TENNESSEE JOHNSTON (#1849) was born in Ripley County, Missouri, November 23, 1903. MARTHA died about 1955. She married FRANK POWELL, date and place unknown. (FRANK POWELL is #1850.)

218 ix. CORA VIRGINIA JOHNSTON (#1851) was born in Ripley County , Missouri, April 9, 1905. . She married ALSWORT FANN, in 1925. . (ALSWORT FANN is #1852.) She later married Walter Eckstein and lived in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.  Cora died in June 1967. 

219 x. WILLIAM JOHNSTON (#1853) was born in Ripley County, Missouri, September 4, 1907. WILLIAM died September 11, 1907 in Doniphan, Missouri, a week after birth.

220 xi. ERNEST CHESTER JOHNSTON (#1854) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, April 1, 1909. ERNEST died January 19, 1928 in Muleshoe, Texas, at 18 years of age.

Note: Ernest Chester Johnston was visiting/working/hitchhiking(?) in Muleshoe, Texas in 1928. For some reason, he was walking on, or near a highway when a passing truck hit him and killed him. It was some time before the body was identified. He is probably buried in Muleshoe.

221 xii. OPAL FLORA JOHNSTON (#1855) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, May 19, 1911. OPAL died on unknown date in Mount Vernon, Indiana. She married ED HUDGENS, date and place unknown. (ED HUDGENS is #1856.)

222 xiii. ALICE HATTIE JOHNSTON (#1857) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, January 23, 1914. ALICE died on date unknown in Long Beach, California. She married THEODORE HERRON, date and place unknown. (THEODORE HERRON is #1858.)

223 xiv. ALBERT HARRY JOHNSTON (#1859) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, January 23, 1914. He married (----------) MAXEY, date and place unknown.(----------) MAXEY is #1860.) Her birth date and place are not known.

224 xv. WOODROW WILSON JOHNSTON (#1861) was born in Doniphan, Missouri, July 28, 1916. WOODROW died July 13, 1944 in France, at 27 years of age. His body was interred in Ripley County, Texas, Towles Cemetery.

Note: Woodrow Wilson Johnston never married. His headstone in Towle's Cemetery reads, "In memory of S/Sgt. Woodrow W. Johnston killed in action in France, July 13, 1944". He may actually be buried in France.
