child 204 iii. JOHN 5 LEWIS (or LOUIS) KEEL (#1875) MARTHA4 P (PARLEE or PARALEE) JOHNSTON (LEWIS BURTON3, GEORGE GREGORY ("G.G." OR "GREG")2, LEWIS1) was born in Johnson County, Texas November 22, 1877. John died January 18, 1929 in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas, at 51 years of age. His body was interred in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico, South Park Cemetery.

He married Eliza England in Breckenridge, Texas, September 22, 1907. (Eliza England is #3829.) Eliza was born in Honey Grove, Lamar County, Texas March 10, 1880. She was the daughter of Thomas Welch England and Nancy Susan Crowley. Her body was interred date unknown in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico, South Park Cemetery. Eliza died April 19, 1921 in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico, at 41 years of age.

Notes: In her 1936 Memoirs, Martha P. Johnston Keel states emphatically that her son, John Lewis Keel, born on the banks of Nolan River in Johnson County, Texas, was named for his two grandfathers, John L. Keel and Lewis Burton Johnston. However, for most of his life, he was known by the nickname, "Louie," apparently causing his family to believe that his middle name was spelled "Louis." He, himself, may have begun to spell his written name that way. He apparently did name his oldest son John Louis, Jr.

John L. Keel, in 1911, owned and operated a Wagon Yard on Virginia Avenue and Second Street in Roswell, New Mexico. It was there that his younger brother, Larkin Almus Keel, worked and, in December 1911, took his own life at the age of 22 by ingesting carbolic acid. No one ever knew why.

John L. Keel was in the livestock and real estate business in the Roswell area through the 1920's. In January of 1929, he was visiting his mother in Abilene, TX. While there, he was stricken and died on January 18, 1929. He was returned to Roswell for burial.
